WORKSHOP - QIGONG

kotau – between heaven and earth

Warszawa05 – 06 April 2025

From a Qi Gong perspective, a flexible, aligned and strong spine favors the harmonious and organized flow of Qi, sets the ground for spiritual work and grants access to higher levels of consciousness.

Workshop Description

For these reasons, an aligned and erected spine is common to all still and inner practices. Many traditional spiritual ways as well as traditional religions know methods to align man with Heaven and Earth.

Mostly, these simple sequences consist of descending and rising motions with different names. In ancient China Kotau meant a respectful salutation, in Buddhism prostrations are known under the name of Apacāyana, in Yoga the Sun Salutations are practiced (Sanskrit: Surya Namaskar), in Zen this practice is called Sampai. Also in the Christian tradition (Prostratio) or in Islam (Sadschda) this form of regard is well known.

Aside from their ritual meaning, these gestures or motion sequences contain every component of Spine Qi Gong. We find movements of bending and straightening, which will generate a rhythmic opening and closing of joints. By this, dynamics of rising and sinking are created. The pumps of the body are initiated, coordinated and synchronized, resulting in a strong and powerful flow of blood, qi and fluids – foundation and prerequisite for inner work, stillness practice and meditation. This relates back to the traditional spiritual practices, where the gesture is not only meant to show respect, but is also aiming to set up the body, facilitating inner work, enabling the practitioner’s consciousness to reach higher levels.

All joints are opened, the body becomes flexible, the tissue pliable and soft. It allows us to «go into depth». In this sense flexibility and pliability mean readiness and volition, humbleness and acceptance for deeper work and meditation.

By perpetual repetitions of the sequence, stamina will be developed. To support the stillness practice, this kind of strength and endurance is needed, just as flexibility and openness are.

The Prostration Practice (KOTAU) taught within the Path of Dao system is composed of 13 Qi Gong exercises. With this workshop we will learn all of the single parts, exercises and contents of the “Kotau” to finally weave them together into a flowing sequence.

The class will be beneficial for your back, strengthen the alignments of your body and your musculoskeletal system. You will become more conscious of your spine and your posture, will feel more alive and vital.

The workshop is open for everybody, beginner or advanced. Feel invited!
