Windmill Palms Exercise and the value of Following

Workshop description

The Windmill Palms originate in the Piguaquan system, a traditional movement practice that remains largely unknown in the West. Despite its rarity, the system offers great benefits for the physical structure, coordination, and energetic balance.

This weekend workshop is offered for the first time. Until now, Windmill Palms have been taught exclusively within the spring retreat setting in Portugal. Windmill Palms practice is characterized by long, protruding, and far-reaching movements.

These motions create deep stretching and opening of the body, particularly in the shoulders, shoulder girdle and pelvic region. In close relationship with the shoulders, the pelvic structure is also mobilized and released. Special attention is given to the waist, an area where tension and stagnation commonly accumulate, which often results in lower back pain for instance. Through continuous pulling, turning and circular motion, the spine becomes elongated, strong and flexible. Simultaneously the legs are developing stability, grounding, and balance.

At more advanced stages, the constant turning evolves into spiraling movements, enhancing the flow of Qi through the body. These circular patterns have a calming effect on the nervous system and support the integration and harmonisation of both brain hemispheres.

By constantly changing directions, we rediscover awareness within movement and orientation in space and time – skills that are increasingly valuable for our uncertain and rapidly changing worlds.
